You\u2019ll know the basics of what to bring for college, the Top 10 essentials<\/a>, and 15 essentials you didn\u2019t know you needed<\/a>, but what about what not to bring to college, and more specifically, what not to bring to a college dorm?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moving Help\u00ae<\/a> will give you a list of 15 items to not bring to college. Of course, you may use that item every day and find it essential, and that\u2019s OK. For most freshmen students, they won\u2019t find these items as essential as they thought they\u2019d be for their first year in college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Not to Bring to College<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bedroom and Closet Items<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When packing your dorm room essentials, you can leave these six items off your bedroom and closet list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Throw Pillows<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

You can use double-sided tape or hooks from Command or other brands. These options are a great way to hang items, add decor to your room<\/a>, and make it feel more at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Bath Bombs<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

While bath bombs are relaxing, they shouldn’t come with you to your college dorm. First of all, your university might have a banned policy for bath bombs. Secondly, they may damage the tub itself. Finally, if you share a bathtub with other roommates, they’ll appreciate they don’t have to shower with bath bomb residue after you’re finished using the shower\/bathtub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Stuffed animals<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re a stuffed animal collector, that\u2019s great. The problem is the beds in a college dorm room are small. You\u2019ll need room to sleep \u2014 and possibly complete your homework. You don\u2019t need to bring your entire collection with you. Depending on the size, you could bring one to five stuffed animals with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Clothes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

You\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0need to bring every single article of clothing\u00a0from home. If you live close to campus, you can bring clothes based on\u00a0the\u00a0season. If you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0live close to campus or\u00a0are\u00a0out-of-state<\/a>, make sure you have at least\u00a0seven\u00a0pieces of clothing for each season. This way, you\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0overpack, but you also have\u00a0the right clothing for all the seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Shoes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Like clothes, you don\u2019t need to bring every single pair of shoes you own. If possible, we recommend trying to narrow it down to no more than seven pairs of shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kitchen Items<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When trying to figure out what to pack for college, you can leave these five kitchen items at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Toaster<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The main reason toaster is on this list is because you\u2019ll probably share your dorm room with someone else. If that\u2019s the case, you only need to bring one toaster between the two of you unless one of you is gluten free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Coffeemaker<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Unless you\u2019re an avid coffee drinker, you don\u2019t need to bring a coffeemaker. It\u2019ll take up space in your dorm room. You can get coffee at plenty of places on- and off-campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9. Pots and Pans<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re not going to cook gourmet meals while living in the dorms, so you can leave your pots and pans at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10. Blender<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Again, like coffee, unless you make smoothies or protein shakes every day, you won\u2019t need a blender. Plus, blenders can be super loud, and no one wants to hear it going off at all different hours during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11. Microwave<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Like a toaster, you\u2019ll want a microwave. You just won\u2019t need two microwaves, so coordinate with your roommate to bring one microwave between the two of you.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Electronics<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Trying to figure out what to bring to college? Well, you don\u2019t have to bring these three electronics with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12. Printer<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Unless you\u2019re in a major where you\u2019ll write many papers, you won\u2019t want to bring a printer because it takes up too much space. Most campuses have free or low-cost options for students to print their papers on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

13. Multiple TVs<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Unless you and your roommate are avid gamers or movie watchers, one TV should be enough for the two of you. Plus, you can watch TV shows and movies off your phone, iPad, or laptop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

14. Desktop Computer<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019ll want a laptop vs. a desktop computer. Laptops are lighter and portable, and you\u2019ll take your laptop to your classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

13. Iron\/Ironing Board<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s be real, are you actually going to iron your clothes? Not likely. Therefore, it\u2019d be easier to keep a handheld fabric steamer on hand or borrow a friend\u2019s steamer or iron. Most situations don\u2019t require perfect wrinkle-free clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

14. Items of Value<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Sentimental or high-value items should stay at home. Unfortunately, some people steal belongings, and you can\u2019t control who comes into your dorm room 100 percent of the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15. Books<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Unless you\u2019re a bookworm, you won\u2019t read all your “To Be Read\u201d list while in college freshman year. You\u2019ll spend more time reading college textbooks and college books for your classes and papers. You can bring a couple of books, of course, but don\u2019t bring your whole collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

15. Large Furniture and Glassware<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

College dorm rooms are small. Therefore, it\u2019ll be hard to fit large pieces of furniture in your room. Plus, you have to take that furniture when you leave your dorm room at the end of the school year, so it probably won\u2019t be worth it in the long run. Additionally, plastic is better than glass, especially when it comes to cups and dishes. Glass breaks, which is a huge mess to clean, and people are bound to accidentally knock something off in small quarters, so it\u2019ll be better to use plastic over glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
