How to Have a Work-Life Balance in 16 Ways

Posted: May 5, 2026
A woman talks during a presentation as five colleagues — three men and two women — sit at a conference table listening to the woman speaking.

It’s hard to imagine that not one person has ever thought about how to have a good work-life balance. More often than not, people dream about having a great work-life balance when their situation is less than ideal at the moment.

Thinking and having a work-life balance are two separate steps. So how does one acquire this perfect balance? It’s not easy, and people have to be intentional, but it is possible. Moving Help® will provide you with 16 ways on how to have a work-life balance in this guide.

What Is a Work-Life Balance?

In the simplest terms, a work-life balance is where someone equally prioritizes the demands of their career with their personal life that includes family, friends, health, and leisure.

A healthy work-life balance can look different for everyone. Someone who works two jobs but doesn’t have children can still find ways to spend time with friends and leisure activities. Whereas someone with a family might only commit 40 hours a week because they have a priority with their family and family activities outside of work.

What’s most important is finding a work-life balance that works for you.

Why Is a Work-Life Balance Needed?

A work-life balance is needed to avoid burnout. If you don’t have a balance between your professional life and your personal life, you’ll likely run into a burnout situation.

Whether you get burned out from work or your home life, it isn’t great.

This is why Moving Help will provide 16 ways on how to have a work-life balance to help you better avoid a burnout situation.

Tip No. 1: Plan Ahead

The first tip is to plan ahead. This all depends on how far in advance you want to plan, but planning your upcoming week in advance is a good start. By writing down or tracking everything you have for the upcoming week, you can better handle your expectations on how each day will go for the upcoming week.

This will help you not forget any tasks that need to be completed. This also helps avoid surprises during the week.

Tip No. 2: Set Manageable Goals

Creating manageable goals in your professional career and your personal life is important. You only have so much time in a day, and it’s impossible to accomplish every single item on your list. Because, well, life happens. By setting manageable goals with yourself, your co-workers, your boss, and anyone else, you’ll set yourself up for success.

Tip No. 3: Be Efficient With Your Time

Raise your hand if you’ve ever spent time doom scrolling rather than working on a much needed-to-get done task? Everyone should be raising their hands at this point.

If you have a busy, jam packed schedule, and you want to get everything done, you must be effective with your time.

Floundering on the sectional couch while doom scrolling when you should fold your laundry from the dryer isn’t the best use of your time. Plus, it’ll cause stress and potential burnout.

Tip No. 4: Ask for Flexibility

When it comes to the workplace, if needed, ask for flexibility or help when it comes to deadlines with your boss. Communicate early and often when a situation arises, so they can help you with your flexibility request.

In your personal life, flexibility can take multiple forms. Whether that’s asking your partner to carry some more of the household chores or having friends meet you closer to where you live vs. where they live for dinner, this flexibility can help avoid straining relationships.

Everything requires a little give and take.

Tip No. 5: Take Small 5-Minute Breaks

Breaks are important. Breaks are needed. Multiple studies show how even taking a five-minute break increases productivity.

Whether you need to add five minutes to your calendar or stand up and walk away from your desk for five minutes, this can help reset your brain.

Tip No. 6: Listen to Music

Listening to music produces many positives. Music can make you more relaxed. Music can make you more focused. Music can make you more energized.

At the end of the day, music improves productivity. If you’re allowed to listen in your workplace, take advantage of this opportunity.

Also, if you’re not a music person but enjoy listening to podcasts, this is another avenue to help improve your focus.

Tip No. 7: Communicate Effectively

Effective communication is easier said than done. No one will have perfect communication. If you aim to have clear communication every single time though, you’re less likely to run into confusion. If you’re feeling overwhelmed professionally or personally, communicating about this problem and the potential solutions can go a long way in fixing your problems.

Tip No. 8: Unplug From Technology

Technology is great. Everyone uses technology every single day. At the same time, it’s OK to disconnect, unplug, and rewind without technology. In fact, multiple studies show not using your phone or watching TV before going to sleep can help you have a better night of sleep.

Rest is key for everyone. If you’re not feeling restful from your sleep, this is one way to try to improve it.

Tip No. 9: Divide and Conquer Tasks

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you wanted to literally do anything — including cleaning your home — before you worked on a giant project? Well, you’re not alone.

Rather than imagining one giant project, try breaking it down into several, smaller tasks. By breaking done tasks in the workplace or in your home life, it won’t feel as overwhelming, and you can get them done much sooner.

Tip No. 10: Learn to Say ‘No’ to Avoid Overcommitment

It’s OK to say “No.” You don’t have to say “Yes” to every single commitment that comes your way. It’s easier said than done, of course.

By learning to say, “No,” you’ll find yourself saying “Yes” to more of the items that you truly care about in your life. This also will help avoid burning out, especially in your personal life.

Tip No. 11: Stay Active

Staying active is absolutely necessary. Staying active has many health benefits for everyone. Not everyone likes to go to the gym, and that’s OK.

Walking for 30 minutes five days a week can have some major health benefits. Exercising can improve your mental health and relieve stress.

Tip No. 12: Treat Your Body Right

Life will always come with its ups and downs, especially when it comes to having a healthy work-life balance. That’s why treating your body right is important. The three pillars we’ll focus on are eating, sleeping, and self-care.

By consistently eating healthy, sleeping the appropriate amount of sleep, and providing yourself with enough self-care, you can make sure your body is in a prime position for success when it comes to life’s challenges.

Tip No. 13: Go to Therapy

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, burned out, stressed out, or all the above, it could be helpful to talk to a professional. Therapy can help you talk to a professional about your life situation — such as breaking up after being in a relationship — and help you sort through your stressors.

Just remember, you should find a therapist that makes you feel comfortable. You may need to go through several therapists before you find the one that fits your needs and works best with you. That’s OK too.

Tip No. 14: Take Your Lunch Breaks

Everyone’s situation is different, but you should always take advantage of your lunch breaks. You should eat your lunch without working. If possible, you should eat somewhere away from your desk. Of course, if you like eating at your desk, that’s great too, as long as you can disconnect.

Multiple studies show working through your lunch break is bad for your health and productivity. So yeah, working through lunch break isn’t the benefit some might think it is.

Tip No. 15: Use Your PTO

You should use all your Paid Time Off. Even if you or a manager makes you feel guilty for taking time off, don’t feel guilty about it. It got approved, and you’ve earned the right to disconnect from work.

Your PTO is part of your compensation package while working at your company. You wouldn’t throw away a paycheck, so don’t throw away unused PTO hours.

Tip No. 16: Set Boundaries

Setting boundaries early on is vital because it protects your mental health, reduces stress, and creates healthy relationships. Whether you need to set boundaries in your career or your personal life or both, this will protect yourself while still increasing productivity.

Having a Work-Life Balance Is Crucial
